Poorly Rose.

Hi everyone,I’m asking for a friend about this Rose,it has been planted in the ground for about three years. The first two years it did really well with lovely yellow flowers. Then last year it flowered but only produced two or three flowers, this year it budded but the buds shrivelled  up & died,so we transplanted it into a pot 2 weeks ago,but it still looks decidedly poorly & quite leggy,so I wondered if it would do it good to give it a good prune,or is it too late in the year to do this. Many thanks in advance.

It’s a big rose for that tiny pot. You need a much bigger one .That won’t flower this year I don’t think. Get it planted in the garden where it’s roots can spread ,or in a huge pot,a deep one ,water well and give it rose feed. You might get lucky .

I don't know where you are but here in Norfolk it has been very dry. Was the rose watered before, when it was in the ground?

It would not have liked being dug up and moved, end of March is the last date to do that. If it had grown any small roots they will probably have been damaged.

I don't know how big the pot is but if it was big enough to take all the roots with room to spare then it it OK for this year. It must be kept watered. Don't move it again until late autumn. A pot 60cms x 60cms is OK for a mature rose if fed regularly and kept moist.

It should have been pruned late winter, early spring.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thank you both.Busy- Lizzie,we are in Whittlesey near Peterborough & have had quite a lot of rain on & off for quite some time so I think it has had enough water,it has been fed  & watered since being repotted.Going to do as you suggest Busy -Lizzie & leave it alone for this year to see how it goes, then prune & repot into a bigger one early next year.Once again thank you both for your advice.
