2 problems with our Laurel hedge

Hello, I was so grateful for the advice on the long Laurel discussion, I trimmed the hedge back and it really did the trick, it’s growing beautifully. However, in some parts over the last couple of months the leaves on some of the bushes went brown and fell off. We put it down to wind damage as it’s quite exposed in the area they’re planted. It didn’t look like any new growth was coming so we dug them up and put them in pots just in case they came back. We replaced those a few days ago with some spare ones that we’d kept in pots, they were looking well until I’ve noticed this morning that the replacement ones have lots of limp leaves and black patches (see photos). They’ve been watered and fed and the others are thriving so could you help with advice  about what this is and what to do please. I’ll include a photo of one of the surviving shrubs with the brown leaves, could you advise me if it is wind damage? Thanks in advance. By the way the mess behind them is our neighbour’s ‘fence’ which I’m desperate for the Laurels to grow and obscure.

Have you investigated the site where your Laurels were dying back ?  If the replacements are also now suffering, it may just pay you to have a good poke down in the soil.
Presume there isn't a dog/cat who has decided to pee against that particular area of the hedge ?
Laurels are pretty hard to kill off so something amiss in the ground ?
Wind/sun burn is not unusual on young plants and the healthy ones will soon recover if they are well watered as they establish their root system.
Hopefully someone will be along to give you advice :)
  • Thanks for your reply, we did wonder if it was the soil as we know that deeper down it probably isn’t brilliant but when we dug the ones that the leaves had gone brown and fallen off up we saw that the soil is ok. We planted them just over a year ago in horse manure & compost and planted the replacements (the ones that the leaves have gone black) with blood fish and bone. I can hardly bear to look at them I’m so disappointed. They were doing so well until about 3 months ago and I’m desperate to hide the mess next door
