So sad many of them are just not around. When I was little we had a big buddleia, and we'd spend whole days by it netting butterflies, and there was quite a choice!
A couple of tortoiseshell have been busy for days flitting around statice, mainly on the yellow statice flowers.
Brassicas are covered in holes and full of caterpillars, no doubt cabbage whites, thought I'd leave them for the birds to feed, but they're not interested. Doubt the plants will come to much except to make compost .
@Lyn Being poorly in identifying caterpillars, I had them in March on the ferns eating their way down, similar to the green ones that were last year identified in the forum as Brown light bright eye. Maybe they were the butterflies that I had just a few weeks later?
@Lyn I had this one in May, too (23.5.). What saw in March was a handful green ones that I had while looking after the
ferns and saw that the green in the old fern leaves were mostly eaten. Being new to this topic, I will keep the butterfly/moth eggs in mind. I have no intention to remove the left-overs from the cabbage. Who knows what is inside. Hopefully, there were not under the Borage leaves, which I removed to have space for the crab apple tree.
Yesterday, I saw a few Speckled Wood butterflies. The difference compare to previous years is that I gradually gave the garden to nature. I plant what they need, give them water, and I led them do. I don't remove slugs/snails, the veggies are for everyone, like last year when the tomato leaves were covered in "Brown light bright eye" caterpillars and others. I must have had hundreds last year, because the tomato plants had hardly leaves left :-). Also, I have had the blue damselfly in the past, but this year I saw 4 different species.
Not a butterfly but in the last week I've seen Hummingbird Hawkmoth in my garden on three occasions, feeding on phlox and lavender. Anyone know if there is an influx this year? I don't see them every year.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
