Yellow Leaves Black Spot

I have a shrub which persistently shows black spots on the leaves which eventually turn yellow.  Any advice on what it is and treatment would be appreciated.

@nickwalters62n4ZZo0KJ Welcome! Do you know what the shrub is please? Looks like an evergreen? Does it flower? Generally it looks healthy, could be simply old leaves.

  • I'm not sure what it is, to be honest.  You are right, most of it is healthy, and I gave it a dramatic prune last year.   I suspect it is similar issue to black spot on roses - the black spots appear fairly widespread and then the leaves turn yellow and drop off.  I have tried black spot treatment for roses, to no avail.

Looks like an Escallonia shrub. They are prone to fungal infections. The best you could do is ensure it's grown in its ideal conditions. Full sun, free draining soil and prune off some of the worst affected branches.

  • Thanks.  I'll try it.

I wondered if it might be Escallonia, flowers will be either white, pink or a pinkish Red.If your soil is clay that might not help the situation if it very wet in winter.

  • My soil is clay.  The problem is more apparent in summer however, and less so in winter.

It looks very much like escallonia leaf spot disease to me. I got rid of mine because of it as I couldn't stand the yellowing spotty leaves any longer. It's a shame it's becoming more of a problem with escallonias as they are very pretty and useful shrubs.
