Advice with newly laid lawn

Hi guys

I’m hoping you can offer some advice , we had a new lawn laid around 10 days ago , we have had good weather (sun and a fair bit of rain) in those 10 days and the grass has really settled quite well , it’s now started growing very quickly already and I’m unsure if I should mow it on a really high setting or leave it longer , I’m concerned about it getting too long but also about cutting too early

I’ve included photos from the day it was laid and how it is now (10 days later)

any help would be fantastic

thanks john

I think it may be too soon but l'm no expert. I think it's at least 3 weeks on average.
It looks like you've been keeping it very well watered  :)
    Hopefully someone can confirm.

    Hi AnniD

yeah I’ve read 3 weeks seems to the the average , but I’m concerned how long it will be if I wait another 10 days , even on the highest setting on the mower I’ll be taking loads off

background on having new lawn is that the house is a newish build (5 years old ) and rear garden was heavy clay , compacted , lawn would not drain in winter and end up full of moss , after few years trying to keep on top of it we just decided to replace the whole lawn , so we dug out 8–12 inches of clay across the whole garden and replaced with good quality topsoil , rolled the new top soil back in stages , then re-turfed .

Blimey, that was a job and a half !
I really can't say for certain the best thing to do, it's certainly growing well. I will hedge my bets and say maybe another 5 days, but l'm still waiting for a "lawn expert" to come along.
I presume you've done the "tug test" to make sure it's knitting into the top soil?

18 tonnes of clay removed by hand 🥵

Yes it’s very well rooted , can’t pull it up anywhere , it started rooting from 4/5 days , now it’s really got a good grip , soon as it got its roots down its just gone crazy in terms of growth

    thanks for your replies 👍

Very impressive @jbrawn. Hard work too. Good for the soul if not the muscles   ;)
If it's well rooted, you could probably risk giving it a light trim. I'm no expert, but if you feel it's going to be too much for the mower, it's probably better to do it in the next few days. I think I'd do it.
I know what you mean about waiting until it's more established, but then it's the length it makes. In the right conditions, it can grow very quickly, and you don't want to scalp it. Some warmth and some decent rain can see it shoot up a lot at this time of year.

Well I went ahead today and cut the grass , on highest setting on the mower , only took maybe top 10mm or so off , seemed to cut fine ,everything seems well rooted down , I’ll take it easy now and slowly lower the length over next few weeks
