Nipping out clematis growing tip

    Nice white clematis, although personally I'm not keen on this Boulevard class...  this is a gr. 3 that unusually starts to flower quite early from May onwards, but it only flowers on new growth.  The fact your granddaughter didn't do anything with hers, means by mid summer it could be larger than desired with lots of bare stems towards the base if it wasn't cut back hard, even though it may look nice at this time..

    It grows some 6 feet a season.  By all means pinch out the growing tips but it's not compulsory if you don't feel confident about doing it.  Without a picture it's difficult to know what you're working with.. 
    You'll have lots of flowers to come but I have found the Boulevard group as a whole, a touch tricky and a little overrated.. but that's a personal opinion..
