Roses

Hello πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I wonder if if anyone can advise me please?

I had my garden planted up in late 2020 and am in my second year of blooms. I have two David Austin shrub roses (Olivia Rose Austin and Gabriella Oak) that are blooming beautifully but appear to be so heavy that they are falling over other plants and stifling them. Is this normal? Do you have to support roses?

Thank you 😊

Hello @Mrs39, Yes, that's quite normal for newish DA roses, it might help to prop them up with Y shaped sticks or whatever will do the job temporarily to keep them off other plants. They should strengthen in the next two years, although DA roses typically do have big heavy blooms anyway.

Incidentally, there is a well-established 'Roses' thread on the forum where it might be best to post any more rose related queries. There are a lot of good, experienced 'rose' experts on there. who can help with problems.

I have Olivia Rose Austin, and, yes, she needed supporting last year.

Thank you so much. I’m still new to this forum so didn’t realise there were separate threats Β or how to find them 😬

It depends on the rose. Some never need supporting, some only when young, some need it even when older because of their floppy or semi-climbing habit.
I have both GO and ORA and they never needed supporting for me but it can also depend on your growing conditions, on the side and the plants around.
Also, many Austins can have heavy blooms and may need some occasional support for just one branch when they are at their best but they don't need a permanent support.
