Help to identify a strange plant growing next to tree please?

    Mine are all beyond the seedling stage now, sorry.
    Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

    Yes the seedlings do have the same leaf colouration as the mature plant.

    Those cuttings never made it, they were riddled with pests I never notice until it was too late. Then the council came and cut the whole growth away including the ripening seed heads :-( I found one tiny seedling left by the tree, and I'm trying to root that just for fun. Although I do know that next Spring I could just shop for the specific seeds.

    Never mind, people always take the seedheads before they're ready anyway if they're within reach of the pavement.

    but to be honest l'm not sure. If you like rich and/or unusual colours, l can recommend "Lauren's Grape" and "Amazing Grey"  :)

    BJ these are common and produce LOTS of seeds, so just ask for some on the seed swap thread. They never are the same as the parent plant, but that’s part of their charm, different colours and sometimes doubles or frilly ones.
