Just a quickie

A friend has asked me if I know what the cause of this is on his clematis. I don't so thought I would ask you. It doesn't look like a bud. Doesn't know what variety of clematis it is and hasn't happened before he doesn't think. Any ideas please?

I agree - it'll just be one of those 'very double' varieties.  :)

Thanks all, I'll put that to him and suggest that he keeps an eye on it and its progress.

Just passed the info on to my friend and asked exactly how long it's been like that and he says about a month so I don't think it can be a bud but time will tell.

It's definitely a bud. If it's short of water, it may be struggling to open it though.

An update on the strange bud on my friend's clematis. Taken today and barely moved since he saw it 5 weeks ago. Anymore thoughts on this please?

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I don't know Liriodendron. On the one hand it looks like a huge bud gone wrong but it isn't opening or at least very, very slowly, on the other might it be fasciation? If I can't come up with an answer I might ask him to perhaps leave it another week and then prise it apart to see what's inside.
