I have just been given some seeds of this plant, is it too late to sow now?

Once they get growing they grow fast - go for it! :)

Sow direct into ground or start in trays?

Sow outside is prob best at this time of year, but you could try both.
I've not grown them for years and can't remember how I used to grow them,
but I sowed some on 13th Apr in trays in the greenhouse - they stated slowly but have grown about 4" in the last week

PS - just came across the seed packet-
Sow indoors Mar-Apr - harden off and plant out at end of May 30cm apart
    or
Outdoors Apr-May - sow thinly and thin out leaving 30cm between each plant
