Sulphur - how should I use this?

in Tools and techniques

Is it too late to sprinkle on to veg beds? Do I water it in or scratch it into the soil? Is it good around the base of established plants like dahlias, clematis, fruit trees? Do you use it sparingly? I bought it last year.

    I have no idea @Fairygirl. It was bought in the sales last year. Just thought should I try and use it up somehow.

    It's generally used for lowering the pH of soil and/or for some crops.
    If you don't need that, there's not much point in using it.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    I agree - don't start messing with the chemistry of your soil unless there's a problem to start with or you may cause other issues.

    I don't know if this one can be used for this purpose, but sulphur also has antifungal properties ( ie so used in tiny quantities if crops or ornamentals succumb to rust/mildew etc etc) 
    Kindness is always the right choice.

    My dad used to sprinkle sparingly on his dahlia tubers when he stored them for the winter but I'm talking 50-60 years ago and things change.

    I only watched a few minutes of the CFS but wasn't there a chap who recommended sulphur for brassicas? I think he mentioned Epsom salts. Wasn't really concentrating so I'm not sure.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

    Yes - it gets used for that type of veg, and the dahlias - that was certainly an old method of storing them. I don't think many people do it now.

    Yes I don’t want to cause more harm. I think the only way to use it might be around my pear trees then. They succumb to rust and have never borne fruit for me in 10 years!
