How long (and difficult) will it be to dig out established privet and hawthorn shrubs?

Thanks for the update @davidgvallancexT0yK6_4 .
It sounds like my privet hedge that was already mature in 1988 when we moved here, and I wouldn't fancy trying to dig up any of it with enough root to replant successfully. Next door had the the stretch along the boundary taken out and a fence put in two years ago, and it took two young strong chaps with a mini-digger a full day not trying to save the plants.

Now we know what you’re up against best just leave the project.
If you wait until winter you can get bare root hedging at a reasonable price,  but not now,  they’ll be potted plants now and are expensive.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Good idea, Lyn. I had a quick poke around online and it looks like we can get a full hedge of bare root plants (at ~150cm) for a couple hundred quid. I'm not sure why I thought this wouldn't work for us! Oh well, time to wait until winter.

After 60 odd years I'm still learning @davidgvallancexT0yK6_4
I'm still keen to ask advice too, that's being a gardener. Best of luck with your hedging project.
