Restios

Hello
I have had a beautiful, very large restio plant for 8 months that was doing  well in its original nursery pot( owner said it would be fine. It has been under cover, watered and the occasional brown stalks have been trimmed off. However it is now rapidly turning all brown with about 3 green stalks left. I adore it- does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much

I don't grow them but remember from a visit to Kirstenbosch that it's a very large and quite diverse genus so you may want to seek advice on your particular species, there are lots of different growing conditions in SA so there are likely to be significant variation in needs between species.

I think they are stunning and would love to grow them. They are better off in the ground but as you are aware they need to be under glass in the cold months. So that's the problem.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

I have a restio growing in my Cornish garden, I have never given it a thought. It was planted in ordinary soil and left to its own devices. It has grown well, to the extent I am going to dig up around it to reduce its size. I have just given a clump to my daughter who has recently lost her restio. Her garden is shady and damp so that is possibly why hers has died. My plant is in a raised bed in full sun with no attention at all and stays outside all year round.
    I love it.
Not much help for your problem.
As yours has been under cover etc. I wonder if it has lacked water.
  • Many thanks for everyone's comments; I will take all your advice on board. I will repot to a larger vessel on the weekend and hopefully that will give it a boost

we bought 3 restios from a specialist grower at RHS harlow carr flower show 4 years ago, we planted as told and according to the information given to us. They never did well and we saw the stall at the following year and asked for further advice which we followed but they just faded away. We did contact the nusery but they were quite dismisive
