Orange bugs on onions

Some of my onions have brown tips and when I touched them they erupted in minute orange bugs. They scattered when I touched them. Does anyone know what they are? Sorry no pic as I was at the allotment without my phone.

    Just found one crawling on the laptop - it’s moving like a very tiny caterpillar.
