Recently bought this and when it arrived it had 3 healthy leaves.
Planted it out and a week later it looks like this.
Would welcome any explanations and solutions.

    Slugs/snails?

    Almost certainly slugs/snails.
Slug/snail pellets are now safe to use and won't harm other wildlife

I would dearly like to grow this - but crambe is top of their menu

I did grow one years ago by my fish pond that is close to the house.
It grew amazingly fast and was covered in clouds of flowers and looked great - unfortunately the smell of rotting cabbage that drifted indoors was overpowering, so it had to go.

You've just reminded @nutcutlet - the smell of rotting cabbage attracted a LOT of flies too.
