Not a problem … we were all beginners once … while we’re at it we can check what sort of compost is best for roses
… despite its name ‘Multi-purpose’ compost isn’t suitable for everything (it’s best for veg and pots of bedding plants etc).
For longer term planting in containers
there’s a range of loam-based growing mediums based on the long-established John Innes formulae. For roses I would use John Innes No 3 with the addition of a little of the multi-purpose just to ‘lighten it’ in the proportions of 4:1.
However @Busy-Lizzie  may have her own opinion based on her experience. 😊

@Dovefromabove, @DeterminedNovice used John Innes No 3. I used earth from the veg garden mixed with manure from my horses and multi purpose peat based compost (all that was available in France then), then topped it up with compost to keep weeds down. JI 3 is the best to use if you on't have another source as it contains loam. They don't have it in France.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Ah yes, so they did @Busy-Lizzie ... my mistake 🙄 ... I'd not read back and obviously hadn't had enough coffee when I posted ... I'm on my third of the morning now so I have no excuses from hereon today.
