Dead Griselinia hedge

Hi, first post here as I am totally perplexed and in need of advice,

We have an established Griselinia hedge. Neighbour snapped by hand the branches off so that he could see over the hedge. Leaves then turned yellow and all have now dropped off after 2 months, the hedge is now bare and branches are black. In addition we also have an alder tree and poplar tree. Person snapped the top part of the trees both are now dead.

After the damage occurred it was dry for a long time and wind was cold. Could it be that the plants were stressed, or do you suspect that it is something else.

Thank you so much for your help

@affect-surface-0n Lots of plants have been stressed this spring. Hardly any rain in April here and as you say cold drying winds. Even established plants have suffered. Just as they start to grow and need water nothing. Personally I doubt if  snapping the stems of shrubs will cause them to drop their leaves. Shock from unusual and adverse growing conditions could. Damage from a broken stem is more likely to result in diease

  • Would poison cause something like this, the leaf drop only occurred in the Griselinia that had snapped branches. The undamaged shrubs survived. Thanks for taking the time to answer. I really do appreciate it.

I think it's difficult to say what has caused the problem @affect-surface-On
Even if a photograph had been added to your short description it would still be difficult because weather conditions are so variable in different parts of the country and personally I couldn't possibly comment on your last question.
