Outdoor quadgrow for tomatoes

HELP! I recently bought the basic 4 plant quadgrow which I will be using out of doors, and will not be able to protect it from rain. I cannot find info on the website about the inevitability of rainwater. Does anyone know if the wicking system will give less water to the plant if the compost is wet from rain? If not how do i manage the rainwater / system water combo?? Does anyone have experience?

I have no experience of these @julessanger, but there was a thread about them recently.
I'll see if I can find it.

@BenCotto uses them so he might be able to help if he sees my tag on his name   :)

I use them but in the greenhouse.  Given that we always say, it doesn't rain in pots, unless the rain is really torrential,  the compost in the pots won't get saturated. I doubt it will upset the wicking system, the plants should still take up what they need.

  • Thank you Fairygirl and Allotment Boy, both helpful. You have started to put my mind at rest as I thought the reservoir would be adding water slowly but constantly. From what you say, if it only adds as it is needed my problem should be solved 🙂
  • I emailed Greenhouse Sensation, and will post any further info when (if) they reply.....

@julessanger your toms will be fine, these are from a few years ago.

Depending on location you are going to need to support the trusses if the fruits are of a heavy variety, as I have had several snap due to the wind.

    Hope this helps.

I've got 2 outside, each with 2 courgettes and 2 tomatoes. 2 are inside, but with all tomatoes.
Will be interested in the reply too, @julessanger

I've been growing tomatoes in/on quadgrows outside for years. I think if they get rained on and you don't use the mulch caps to stop the rain getting in GS pretty much have a disclaimer about how good the system is as you are not using it as designed. But really, it's fine.
Did your courgettes work? I'm not sure they like getting wet roots. (Roots do tend to grow down into the tanks of QGs.)
Meanwhile has anyone got the holiday watering kit to work? Mine leaks at the tap. It's driving me nuts.
