Do I need to pinch out the side shoots?
Any help appreciated.

I never pinched the sideshoots out when I grew them and they were fine. You’re growing them for the roots/tubers, so what happens above ground is only important in that the important thing is that there’s plenty of top growth to feed the roots etc.

We cuts ours back by about half after they have reached about 6ft, normally in July.  Otherwise they get too big and heavy, and the pots get blown over.  It doesn’t appear to affect the harvests, which are always good.

Never grown them in pots but always outdoors. They do get very tall and the harvest has always been good.Haven't grown them for some years though.
