@bertrand-mabel I could show you a picture of another one, again a year old. That one may really have to go. Its like a medieval booby trap with a single 6 inch stem spike coming up from the ground - it only has 4 leaves! Very embarrassing.
However, on the other side of the garden (which gets full bloody sun!) I have one at 5 years old which is flourishing. This year is the first time its flowered, its a Zorro with lilac flowers - allegedly. I'm excited for that one.
@gerrito - if the one you mention in your latest post is that small, it would have benefited from being grown on for a lot longer before planting out. Even tough hardy shrubs will struggle if planted out in open ground at that size.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I would dig up the weedy looking one, could be vine weevil, they love them, usually they get to more robust plants then they don’t suffer, the ones i do from cuttings , in pots almost always have a vine weevil or two. Once they’re potted on and growing well in 6” pots, I plant them out. I’ve got about 60, they love it here. I’m a great believer in growing what suits your soil and conditions rather than trying to change the soil.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
That's interesting re the vine weevils @Lyn. I've never done cuttings from mine - I wouldn't have room here to plant them @gerrito - I never plant anything out that's in a pot smaller than about 4 inches, and never shrubs. They would need to be in a pot as Lyn describes - healthy, and filling a decent sized pot. I can get away with some smaller perennials if they're going out in summer. Any other time - they're too vulnerable from weather or slugs.

@Lyn and @Fairygirl I think vine weevils may be a strong possibility you know. I've seen the odd holes in a couple of plants but particularly the buddleia which is too tough to care.
My mum in law gave me a potted camelia a few months ago which was rife with grubs. I rinsed off all the soil but very likely there were some hidden - it was very pot bound. Good shout!
