It's why they're best planted with other perennials. They take a while to die back. They have quite a good length of flowering time, depending on the variety, but no bulb will flower for months. Around one month of flowering is a good length of time for any plant/bulb. If they were only planted in December, they did well to flower at all

I would have been happy with a month of flowering. From what I remember they flowered for just over a week then died. @Fairygirl when should I have ideally planted them then?
They're available for buying from around September - you'll see them in GCs etc, and online at that time, sometimes earlier. That's the ideal time to buy and plant them, as they have time to get established and form roots. It's certainly possible to still buy them later in the year and plant them, but they're not getting the benefit of being in the ground [or a pot] and having that time, because they've been sitting around, and can get dried out. They'll be better next year, as they'll have had time to get some nourishment from that dying foliage
