Geum Princes Juliana, how big does it really get?

NollieNollie Posts: 7,529
Anyone grow this? Online says up to 60cm wide, do they really get that wide and if so, how fast? I had planned on planting in a group of three but the maximum I could give them is 30cm apart. Would this suffice for a few years or is that far too close? I could plant them singly but would individual plants be a bit lost on their own?

Cheers.

I used to have them, in my garden they had a very similar habit to 'Mrs Bradshaw'. The base growth (leaves) were only around 20cm across, the flowers grew on long stems that did reach 60cm, but the plants themselves didn't need 60cm of space, much nearer 20 - 30cm apart. Hope that makes sense?

Absolutely it does, thank you @gjautos. The height is not an issue, it was only the width I was concerned about, 60cm wide seemed ridiculous going on my previous geum experiences. I wondered if they were some freakish monster variety! I shall go ahead then and plant them in a close group of three.

I don’t grow that variety, but a quick search of various websites all suggest a spread of 45 to 60cms.

Yes that’s what I was reading too, punkdoc, but after how many years?! I’m sure the French nursery I bought it from never said anything like that width, but I can’t find it listed there now, hence checking in here. I’d rather plant them closer and divide later rather than look at lonely plants separated by moats of bare soil.

I grow this in a container, so maybe not the same as when in the ground - but (in comparison to e.g. Scarlet Tempest) it seems a much smaller plant at the base, across the diameter that the leaves cover, but similar height and length of the stems - as @gjautos says. I'd think you'd be fine planting 30cm apart - the flower stems would overlap but the basal area of the plant would be OK.
