Acer - looks dead and mouldy in places.

Hi - I received this Acer Bi Hoo from Gardening Express yesterday. There are dark marks and what looks like mould on the coral bark. Does anyone know what this might be please?

That looks like verticilium wilt to me - the black marks are an indication.  :/
Get in touch with them, include photos. Ask for a refund.
Buy a new one somewhere reliable. Even the ones for sale in supermarkets are a better bet. That's a dreadful looking specimen anyway.

Keep that somewhere away from your other plants in the meantime.

    Agree @Fairygirl.
Demand your money back, that is a terrible plant.

Thanks both. I did get a refund for this plant. I think I am going to keep it quarantined in a large pot for a year and see if it improves. There was another large Sangu Kaku sent with it which had blackened wispy tips/wilting leaves. Equally sickly looking- I didn't ask for a refund on this plant. Photo for comparison. So disappointing.

The other one may just be damage from transit and weather. Not possible to see it well enough in the photo.
I'd be very worried though, if they think that other one was appropriate to send out to a customer. Dreadful.
I wouldn't keep it - sorry. Up to you though.

    That was my argument.

I think you'll just have to keep an eye on the other, bigger one. If it starts showing any signs though, take photos, keep it away from other plants, and contact them.

  • This is the larger plant. A little bit of an aphid problem I think.

Yes - it's likely just standard damage, whether it's pests or the transportation,  but keep an eye on the main stems and branches for any tell take signs of wilt, and post some photos here again if you're concerned.   :)

I'd never buy anything from that company though - not Acers anyway. They don't have a very good reputation in general from what I can gather.
