Tidal wave petunias dying

I started red velour and silver tidal wave petunias from seed, had really good luck with germination and nice plants.  The red were a little ahead of the silver.  However after I set them out, many of the red have died, only about 2 or 3 silver have.  Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem.  The ones I set in pots are doing great.  I have attached several pics. As you can see there are healthy plants right along side the sick one and all were set out at the same time.

Do the roots on the dying plants look OK?
I have had similar happen before and found that the plants had almost no roots - I don't know why though

  • Yes, actually the roots look good.  We are wondering if it might be that the mulch either had something leaching, or was keeping it wetter than they liked.   It’s crazy because they are growing and spreading one day and the next the leaves are curling up.

I think it's more a case of putting tiny plants into a great big space. Very easy for the fine roots to get waterlogged because they're accessing a lot more soil, and therefore staying wetter than is ideal for the stage they're at.
Bark isn't something I would use around bedding plants. There's a house near me which has a bed at the front boundary. Pelargoniums surrounded by a sea of hefty bark. I'm wondering how long it'll take for them to succumb, or be eaten by slugs. Bark is a perfect hiding place for them.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Thank you Fairygirl.  We decided yesterday evening that the bark could be the problem so we raked it away from all the plants.  I did leave a couple of the ones that were looking poorly and this morning they seem to look better so I definitely think the mulch was playing a part in it.  I appreciate your thoughts on it.
