Think there’s a fungus in my hanging basket?

Hi!

i recently filled a hanging basket using a multi purpose, peat free compost (specifically:  https://www.homebase.co.uk/homebase-peat-free-multi-purpose-compost-50l/12834297.html?utm_source=ecrm-order-confirmation-store&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ecrm-order-confirmation-store&affil=thgemail&ecrmcid=4DlL0pbMkB8q3bV6L0P31N2ZJ96PazYG&shae=nydMlaRMzBHfBxf5K2KwmBvRtQZWIPvhXDUuMKIo8hM%3D&sendTime=1651310389 ). I just looked in it and it’s got this weird substance all over the top. Anyone have any clue about what it is/ what I should do? Thanks in advance!!

Yes it's a fungus/mould that is breaking down the compost to provide nutrients for your plants.
It'll be gone in a few days - no need to do anything

It's just a fungus of some kind which aids the breakdown of material, and is part of the whole process of compost.
It's been mentioned a couple of times recently on the forum.
Unlikely to be a problem, but if you just run your hand over it and mix it lightly, it should be fine   :)

Oh thanks team! I was panicked I’d have to get rid of it all and re pot it. Cheers very much :) I was also wondering if it was because it might have gotten a bit too soggy (it’s a shadier part of the garden) but this is great news!

Some of these composts are very variable to say the least - either too dry or too wet, and people are having difficulty with a lot of them.
Just keep an eye on it, and judge the dampness/dryness according to what will suit the plants you have in there  :)
