Is this dog rose?

msqingxiaomsqingxiao Posts: 482
Bought two bare root roses from Sainsbury's last year which are supposed to be pink climbing roses. They only flowered recently but turned out to be single white flowers which look like dog rose / wild rose?

If so I may dig them up and buy new bush roses to plant. Any recommendations please? It's southwest facing clay soil. Something that is relatively disease-free and scented would be great.

Also heard about the rose replant disease so guess I'll need to replace all the soil in the planting hole?

Thanks!

Looks like the root stock, usually Rosa Canina ‘Laxa’, that the pink climber has been grafted onto, has suckered from the base of the rose and taken over. If there are any of the proper rose canes left (the canes and leaves will look different) you can sharply tug down on the suckers at the base to remove them and let the real rose grow. The suckers will normally grow from below the graft, or sometimes on it - that’s the knobbly joint between the two - so gently scrape a little soil away from the base so you can see exactly where the suckers have emerged.

A year is a bit soon to be worrying about rose replant disease, it takes a while to build up in the soil, but I generally tend to replace the soil just in case when swapping out roses that have been in the ground for more than one season. Probably unnecessarily!
