Caterpillar? identification

Can any of you knowledgeable people identify the caterpillar or larva in this picture which was found on this rather poorly looking apple tree?

    I can't identify it as it does not seem to be in my caterpillar identification guide. As a result, I have decided to buy a better guide! It is one of the geometrid moths, but there are loads of them.

    My guess would be a Mottled Umber, but pic doesnt show enough to be sure

    I think it is Mottled Umber, which seems to have very variable caterpillars.
