Olive Tree Losing Leaves

I have a large Olive tree which has suddenly started loosing a lot of leaves. I fitted artificial grass last autumn and I wondered if that had resulted in the tree not getting enough water.  Also, will it recover.

    How long has it been there and what size was it when you planted it? Olives are Mediterranean plants and the UK is not their ideal habitat. They will do better is some parts of the UK but not all areas so a county level description of your location would be helpful.

    I live in Somerset. Tree been there for 10 years  with no problems  until last year when artificial grass laid next to it. 
    Originally bought as a 2ft hight plant.

    @janetwilcocks I'm new to this, but I have two much smaller olive trees. I read that they have shallow root systems, so a tree that size might need/have wider reaching roots - which backs-up your thought about your artificial grass (which looks pretty close to it).
