Foxgloves…

aidanhoadaidanhoad Posts: 174
Hi all,

I have been patiently waiting since last spring, hoping that this year the foxglove that randomly appeared in my garden will flower - can anyone tell me if what I’m seeing at the top of these are flower heads or if it’s just more leaves!

I know I could just wait but the suspense is killing me!

Thank you!

Yes, those are flower buds.  Not long to wait for flowers...   :)

Thank you - so excited to read that!

Hoping as well that they will spread this year again…

If you leave the spent flowers you will have more seeds than you know what to do with...  you can sprinkle some around, and save others to sow next spring in a pot or tray, to plant out.  As you've discovered, they grow for a year before flowering.

You will definitely have self seeded plants next year! I've been spending the last few weeks trying to get rid of a load. I dug them up as I just don't have space for 500 foxgloves (slight exaggeration), but couldn't bear to bin them so I put them in pots and have been advertising them for free online! I expect I will have the same issue next year!  I don't want to gloat but several of mine are already flowering 😆

I’m so desperate for them to flower, it’s a mix of the fact that they’ve just miraculously self seeded here (I’m surrounded by Croft land with no flowers) and having waited a year already!

Theyve put themselves nicely in my border so they can spread to their hearts content!

I’m very jealous yours are already flowering, I’m hoping if the sun keeps on I’ll see a bit of colour in the next week or so…!

    Nowhere near flowering here yet.
Just be aware that cultivated varieties can often cross, or revert back to the native one.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Half of mine are flowering now. Lovely plants, aren't they?

    They’re so beautiful!

Wondering, should I be staking them… very worried given I live in a very exposed very windy area… will be devastated if I lose them after waiting so long!

If they've grown up there, as opposed to being planted, they'll be fine, it's what they're used to. I've had 6 footers in the teeth of a westerly gale and they're fine :)
Mine pop up all over the garden and I just work round them, except for the odd one that's in a really awkward space.
