Yes - the ready bagged stuff available in GCs or DIY places is fine - it isn't like fresh stuff straight from the....well...you get the picture  ;)

Having shovelled plenty of that in my former life, I don't notice the smell from it anyway  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Hi guys, sorry just checking to see the thoughts on the differences between bark chipping and wood chippings. I've used this for the last couple of years  https://www.diy.com/departments/verve-red-woodchip-mulch-100l-bag/1585959_BQ.prd  but I see there is also https://www.diy.com/departments/verve-dark-brown-bark-chippings-large-100l-bag/1586186_BQ.prd

Although just noticed this is even better value https://www.moleonline.com/westland-landscape-bark-100l-1009039

    Just down to personal preference?

    I prefer bark to woodchips.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I agree - bark is far better. It looks better too. I'd be a bit wary of those coloured woodchips.

Interesting if you read the comments on that one, and the reply to one of them about the improvements created, and the weed fabric. It's completely incorrect. The benefit lies in the bark breaking down and improving the structure. It doesn't leach 'goodness' through a weed barrier fabric.

I have used that red for last 3 or so years but might change. I do have half a bag left in the garage so might use up that to get rid of it then top up with the Westland stuff which seems cheap.

But then I do have fabric as well already down so obviously not benefitting anyway  :#

Manure is the way to go. The closer to the horse the better, in my opinion.

Is one animals manure better than an other animals?
How can you lie there and think of England

Chicken and herbivores are said to be best. Maybe the OP's wife would be happier with chicken manure pellets.
