Do you bury the white shoots so that they are the usual 3x their own depth? Maybe just water them in and cover them with a bit of dry mulch or even leave the hole open like when planting leeks?

A factor favouring usual depth (which I have just though of) is that the bulbs might dry out too quickly and also fry here, so on balance, usual depth it is!
Bulbs that are too shallow can often not perform well, as @JennyJ says, and they're also easier for squirrels to dig up
