Beech Hedge Hard Trim - Need to do it now!

I have a very old, well established beech hedge running the length of my garden that hasn’t been cut back since we moved in almost 7 years ago.
we are having a shed built at the back of the garden but the hedge is overgrown in that area.
Aside from the obvious risk to nesting birds which I am taking very seriously and will not do anything likely to harm a nest, I’m wondering whether cutting that section of the hedge with shears now will physically damage the hedge?
I’m aware that the leaves may not fill out that area for a few years after doing this but I’m more concerned about damaging the hedge.
Any help or advice appreciated.

Hi, you should be fine. Make sure they are clean cuts and remember the top will regrow much faster so don't go as mad at the bottom if you want it to full out.

Yes birds nests allowing go for it. We did the same a couple of years ago and it’s filled out again in no time.

    It'll be absolutely fine  :)
You'd be surprised how quickly it will regenerate.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
