    Chicken wire can be cut with an old pair of secateurs you don't care about any more, ditto sturdy old kitchen scissors, or a pair of proper wire 'snips'  ... good luck.

    It doesn’t look like it’s been chewed,  it’s like a bulbous bit that has grown and split. Did you find chewed bits in the ground around them,  they usually leave a bit of evidence.

    I know what you mean, but there is the other one where one of the thin branches that stem off just above the ground has a long bit missing. Is it normal for bark to come away like that by itself?

    Just a thought … any muntjac deee in your area?  Any sign of deer slots/hoof prints anywhere?
