Lily of the valley, planting in May

I was given a dozen lily of the valley crowns, just potted them up. What are their chances this late in the year?

Unlikely. They're flowering here now. Possibly earlier in other parts of the country.
They'll need to establish first. Even viable, healthy pips can take years to settle in and flower  :)

Mine are flowering here as well.
Agree with @Fairygirl, it took me years to get them established, and now they are rampant.

They should settle in just fine now.
Missed flowering for 2022....be patient for next May to  hopefully see the flowers.
They are very happy in shade.
    Can be invasive.

Please note they are toxic to cats and dogs, if that affects where you want to plant them.
  • I wasn’t expecting flowering this year, will they go into leaf or just stay as crowns until next spring?

Hopefully the leaves will grow now.
If they don't the plant may not come back next year.

  • Quick update, all are growing nicely in pots. Next question, should these be planted out this year or kept potted until spring given how late they are?

They can be planted out at any time. Just keep them well watered over summer to establish them. They'd need that in pots anyway, but it's easier if they're in the ground. As long as the root systems are holding together when you take them out the pots, they should be fine to plant    :)

  • Thanks. How much leaf would you say is needed before planting out?

They could probably go out now. They've obviously settled well if they're growing foliage. They're fairly indestructible.  :)
