Encouraging growth in young trees

Can anyone offer any advice on encouraging growth in young trees? tips on watering? any feed?
We have a young Tibetan cherry, it been in the ground about 18 months. it roughly 7-8 foot high, but very skinny. main trunk is only about 1 inch across.
would like to see the trunk thicken up and fill out with a few branches, any advice greatly appreciated. (I realise "time" is the biggest factor)

Time and water, give it plenty of both. Make sure there is no competition nearby, keep the ground clear of any other plants within a diameter of at least 1 metre.

Is your tree in a sunny position and away from house walls, fences etc?  If you prepared the planting site well and the soil is in good condition, it's just a question of patience and making sure the soil is kept moist, but not waterlogged.  You can help retain moisture in the soil around the tree by applying a mulch of organic material such as compost, leaf mould, farmyard manure, or similar.

  • Thanks steephill and Plantminded! I think my two takeaways there are, "clear away any competition" pretty sure there is stuff planted pretty close, and "apply mulch"
    really helpful, thanks!

One more takeaway - keep well watered, particularly over summer!  Good luck!
