Camelia pruning

I have a large and fabulous camelia (when in bloom) however i think its on serious need to a bit of a prune and shape up.

Im nervous about cutting back to hard. Are there any good tips that wil help make sure i dont do lasting damage and how bes to prune?

Thanks in advance!

Just tidy it up all over  :)
They can take quite hard pruning, but the other way of doing it is to take around a third of the stems right back the first year, and do that over a three year period with the other two thirds, so that the whole shrub is renewed.

It's obviously been pruned to have the bottom, main trunks, exposed - like a standard, and that can work very well with Camellias. The majority of them want to be very big shrubs in the right conditions. It's clearly happy  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thinking to remove one of mine (age unknown but 10' or so high) I chopped back to 6".
Changed my mind and let it grow again. It did, in spades!
