Flowering tomato Marmande

A large  flower has appeared at the top of the stem and the stem has stopped growing. Grown from seed ( I used last year's packet) this has happened to all the plants I moved onto larger pots. The plants are about 12 " high and quite healthy, but have this strange sunflower like flower straight on the top of the stem - Anybody have any ideas and should I cut it off?

The beefsteak type of tomatoes often have double flowers - just fewer of them as they produce fewer but much bigger fruits.
Or is it that there is no longer a growing tip of the plant?

  • It's the latter, the growing tip has become a flower with normal flowers underneath. As I said I grew these successfully last year and got a good crop and the plants grew until about 4' high. This year they have stopped getting taller and produced the flower on the main shoot.

I've had the same on Rosella a few times. But fortunately there's been a spare side shoot to take over upward growth.
Are there any side shotts you could left to produce a new growing top of the plant?

My Beefsteak F1 has done exactly the same thing and a Sungold that looks like it's heading the same way and possibly an Ailsa Craig.

Like Pete says, look for a side shoot to promote as the new growing tip.
