Issue with roses, please help!

Hello, I have two roses which I have had for two years. I pruned them both back in Feb this year. New growth has not appeared as expected and instead I have almost miniature leaves at the points on the stems I would expect new growth. Does anyone know the issue and how to solve. Picture attached. Many thanks in advance.

Hello @jonathanroy1988cHFJkjl3 and welcome to the forum 😊

Has anyone used any weedkiller in the vicinity?

Or has there been manure from a new source used on the bed?

I agree looks like weedkiller damage to me.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • Thanks for your replies. We don’t use weed killer and have not applied any manure. I’ve only added some top soil from another area of the garden and trimmed roses in Feb.

Is it possible someone nearby has used it and it has blown about? This is my only other suggestion.

How has your weather been, had any frosts just as they were starting to bud? Has it been very dry and windy thus they are suffering from windburn/drought?  Either can cause tender new growth to die off. If not weedkiller or weather, I can only suggest give them a really deep water - a full watering can or two poured slowly at the roots - plus spread a fresh mulch of compost around the base and snip off any blackened ends of the canes. Hopefully they will recover.

Thanks Nollie. I live in Scotland so we regularly have four seasons in one day  :) I will try your suggestions.

They may well have been nipped then Jonathan. Not just Scotland, I suffered severe dieback of my tender new rose growth after prolonged frosts earlier this year. Yep, we get them in Spain too, especially in my northerly, mountain location! Finger’s crossed they recover for you.
