I've never pruned my Aubrieta, and i have it spilling over a low wall mixed in with creeping phlox in various colours.

@Ladybird4 I was seriously considering Muehlenbeckia, the only niggle being that the spread is way more than I need as my raised beds are only 35cm high. There would be constant pruning involved and although Aubrieta will need keeping in check, it won't be quite to the same extent. Muehlenbeckia also flowers during the summer and the majority of my plants are summer flowering. My garden's only just starting to look alive so I desperately need something to perk it up in spring and provide for emerging pollinators. I was also already considering adding purples so Aubrieta seems to tick all the boxes.

I think Aubrieta is an excellent choice. I have grown 24 plants from seed this year - mixed colours - some to help out my brother who has just moved into a new house.

@Balgay.Hill I like the sound of that, knowing my luck though it'll need pruning!

@Ladybird4 Not sure how I'll fare growing from seed. I'm trying annuals for the first time this year and I've made it to the seedling stage without too much trouble. How many will make it to half decent plants remains to be seen!

@februarysgirl Not sure if it would be too tall but you could try Haloragis Wellington Bronze. There is also Geranium Maculatum Espresso, G sessiliflorum and Sedum Chocolate Ball which is soil colour so needs a lift from something else. You may feel that all of these are too brown.

@GardenerSuze They're definitely much too brown. When it comes to flowers I'd like brown but the foliage does need to be green (although not not varigated, I don't like varigated). At the moment though, with the exception of the Aubrieta, there's not a lot I can do as far as planting decisions go until next year because I need to see how much growth the shrubs put on this year. I only planted them last year and am making do largely with annuals to fill the gaps.

@februarysgirl I think there is a petunia with bronze flowers and a calibrachoa . You are wise to see how your shrubs grow first.
