@Silver surfer EEEK, Norway Maple does not sound romantic at all. It's got quite an invasive tree reputation, bit of a neighbourhood bully.

Strangely enough there are roses growing underneath this big tree in question. Euphorbias, roses (type with thick canes and huge rose hip), some other shade loving plants and plenty of grass.

In any case the little seedlings by the house will be removed. They are much too close to the foundation.

@Fran IOM Isn't this forum lovely? Knowledgeable and generous posters, if not a little mischievous at times! I didn't know pound land sells live plants too, well done you! I imagine nursing plants back to health would be quite satisfying, wish I could do the same.
I mustn't take any credit, I simply found them by the overgrown hedge that is more a jungle than a border.

It's so lovely to be reminded of childhood by flowers. You must have grown up in a beautiful garden.
My mother loves flower display, growing up all the flowers/trees/evergreens are destined to end up in vases. The garden always looked somewhat dishevelled when she is free

For a garden I'd rather have a Norway Maple than a Sycamore any day of the week.  Sycamores self-seed all over the place and attract aphids and then drip black sooty honeydew all over the plants below.

As for a bit of California Dreamin' ... I think you can allow yourself a little poetic licence 🎵

I was reminded of my childhood by the thought of a sycamore with seedlings popping up everywhere :/. There was one in my parents' garden and pulling out the seedlings was one of my chores, until a few years after the tree was cut down. It took that long for seedlings to stop appearing.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

The Acer looks like a Norway Maple, they are prolific self seeders . Sycamores get tar spot which will appear midsummer.
