When to trim broom shrub

I have two Brooms. They were a really nice shape. After some heavy rain they have gone a bit wild. There is a got 1 -2 inch new growth - above the flowers that still remain.

My question, is when if ever do you trim, cut Brooms. I have read several suggestions. All from cut around May - or after it has finished flowering, to cut right down to the ground.

Can anyone offer what they do - as I don't want it to become to bushy and woody.

where would I cut from? As said there is already quite a lot of new growth - which has appeared in the last couple of weeks.

thanks.

    Prune after flowering.
    Cut back to side shoots.
You can totally remove [ back to ground level ] about 1/3rd of shoots every year.
How can you lie there and think of England
