New Beech Hedge Leaves going brown

Hi. I planted a new beech hedge in January. All plants are now out in green leaf however I have noticed that on a few of the plants some leaves are turning brown. I live in Northern Ireland and it hasn’t been overly dry yet. Do I need to water more? Should I be feeding the hedge? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

It shouldn't need feed, but it will need watering. A bucket of water per yard per week for the first year.
  • Posting a picture of the issue might help get a better answer. A few brown leaves is not a whole lot to go on to tell if there is a specific problem with the hedge or is it just the plants are taking time to settle in. Beech from what I read is better in drier soils but some water at planting would still help the roots get settled. Does the soil near them feel damp or dry? I don't think hedges really benefit a lot from feeding and just keeping them free of weed competition and maybe providing a mulch when the ground is already well watered might help.

    I think that needs water.

Is it in a planter/ raised bed?

No it's in the ground with mulch

Agree it looks like a lack of water issue.

I tried to grow a beech hedge without success many years ago as it was a whitefly magnet for me. It doesn’t look like this is your issue but worth keeping an eye out for them under the leaves.
