What killed this tree?

I hope someone can help me. In the first photo, bottom left, their is a beautiful purple leafed tree. This year it has died- no idea what caused it to die.

    The second photo looks like physical damage that's started to heal (obviously not successful) Could we have an in focus pic of number three, the centre parts.
