They're too orange or too yellow and too pompommy for me. And then there's that muddy green one.
I'm sure they look good in the right place. I haven't got the right place😊
they're too " beddingy " for me. Council roundabouts and naff planting. BOKE

Someone offered me African marigolds last year. I didn't find them hard to resist😒
I use them as sacrificial plants in and around my veg and other goodies.

In answer to the question… YES rain is different to tap water. It has more nitrogen and oxygen plus less minerals and no additives like chlorine and fluoride. I only know this from researching about filling ponds with tap water. My grandmother used to say to only water certain plants with rain water - mainly houseplants.

Another weirdness for me: sacrificial plants. It seems so uncivilized.
    I couldn't do that even to a ceanothus😕
    In London. Keen but lazy.

The way I see it is that even if I liked African marigolds, they would still be eaten so it’s nature’s way (evil laugh).

@AuntyRach - it's why we can use tapwater here for ponds or even plants which would be unhappy in other parts of the country, if needed. We don't have the level of 'stuff' in our water that other areas seem to have.
I have some sacrificial plants - hostas mainly. Just a waste of time persevering with them.
I'm not very sentimental about plants though. They're plants, not children.  ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
