Sweetcorn germination

Hi all
I’ve a potted sweetcorn seed which has not emerged. However, when I cleared away some of the compost, the seed has a 2-3 inch root, but nothing going up!
Just interested to know if I recover it, is it likely to grow eventually, or is it best to give it as a bad one?

Thanks in advance

Mine were a long time this year,I sowed them 26/4 they started coming up a week ago, now some are 6 inches tall.
  • Thank you, Nanny Beach.
I will give it another week or so, then.

Andy,Did you only sow one,if I want/expect 6 plants,I would plant at least 10 seeds, plus sweetcorn is wind pollinated, not by insects,so you need at least a block of 4.

I have had the same problem with my sweetcorn and peas. I have just made my third sowing of peas, I am going to do the same with the sweetcorn, hoping to get a few more plants.
  • sweet corn can take 1-3 weeks to sprout so be patient.
you need min 16 plants to  get good germination

  • Thanks all. I have sown plenty. I was expecting some to fail but only one has done so! But as it has a long root, I’ll wait to see what happens. Thanks again

I see there's another question about sweetcorn on here, one reply saying you need to grow 20. I grow between 4 and 8. No problem with germination,we do give them a shake.

I usually only grow a maximum of 8 eight plants and always get cobs to set
