Acer Palmatum issues

Hello,
I have 2 x Acer's that have issues this year and I'm trying to find out if it's terminal?
One is Bloodgood and the other is Sango-kaku.
As you can see, both have lifeless branches and I cannot work out if the branches are dead or whether the uncertain climate has affected them.
Bloodgood: Buds appeared on the branch in question but they turned brown and crispy before they opened and now the branch is barren.
Sango-kaku: Leaves appeared but within days wrinkled up and the whole branch has lost its coral coloured bark.

Both are in very large containers, both are heavily mulched and both are fed with acer feed in the growing season. Neither had issues last year.

It's heartbreaking as both are showstoppers and I am hoping that the damage is just affecting this seasons growth and will return next year but I would be very grateful for any advice.

Thank you in advance.

It sounds like excessive drought, frosts  and cold wind, all of which they hate. I would leave them alone until they are in full leaf, nip off any dead twigs etc. also any dead branches although I think you may find they will make new growth eventually.
