Black Acer branches

edited May 2022 in Problem solving
Can anyone help? My Japanese Acer has some branches that have turned black and anything growing above it is stunned. I have attached some photos. Thank you in advance.

Looks very much like verticillium wilt. It is not treatable, but Acers with it will often survive.
Cut off the dead bits, but don't cut back into living tissue.

It could well be VW as said above.
If it is that, personally I'd get rid of the plant including the compost into household waste. You don't want VW getting into your garden soil - like I have...

Another possibility is that there's a problem where the graft is which has caused the top part of the tree to die back and the new shoot is from the rootstock.
Does the leafy branch look like the rest of the tree did last year?
