Erigeron karvinskianus should be fine with some neglect, would look lovely growing over the edges, and will be flowering for ages.
That's another great idea Edhelka. I remember admiring fleabane gelkan holiday at a cottage on the Isle of Wight. What would you suggest for winter interest when it does back?
    Thanks P

There is a prostate rosemary - evergreen and flowers early. It would set off the wall well. But if you are only staying in the house for a few months more you might not see the benefit of the plants

It depends where you are - mine doesn't really die back. It can look a bit tatty out of season, but a judicious trim while it's still warm enough to be growing, albeit slowly, can keep it looking tidy over winter. I tend to have a few flowers most months.

My fleabane is Green through the winter - in London. It can die back around Feb before resprouting. But often it will go straight through.

    Thanks all
I'm out in rural Herts, a bit more frost prone.
Does the Erigeron 'bulk out' fairly quickly? 9cm pots look good value on multi-pot deals online. How many do you think I need to cover the 5' ?
    Thanks P

I would personally go for two litre pots if you want quick filler
