Damaged cotyledons

My husband is taking part in a who can grow the tallest sunflower competition. I think they're gross but there you go😒
Anyway, many of his seedlings have emerged with damaged or warped cotyledons ( it wasn't me. I promise)
Does this bode ill for the emerging true leaves? Is the plant likely to be unhealthy?
In London. Keen but lazy.

    I wonder if he has tried to pull the seed casing off it,  that can damage those leaves, some do come up with the casing attached.

    As long as the seed leaves aren't completely broken off and the growing point between them isn't damaged, they should be fine.
    Stuck seed casings are best left alone even though it's sooooooo hard to resist the temptation to pick at them (like scabs :D). I sometimes just gently dampen them with water to soften them up and make it easier for the plant to push off as the seed leaves expand.
