Pinching out a chilli plant for or against

  • Just jumping on this thread briefly as this is my first year growing chillies and peppers in my greenhouse - sorry if this is a stupid question, but will they need staking if they grow to 4ft? And if so is there any particular kind anyone would recommend? Thank you  :)

I grow mine in the polytunnel with the tomatoes so they get one of the metal twirly stakes, same as the tomatoes.  No need to tie them in.  Just guide the leader thru the curves of the spiral stake.  This kind of thing -

Tomatoes are heavy so they need quite substantial support.
Peppers and chillies are comparatively light, but my peppers always need support and on occasion chillies.
All I use is 3 bamboo canes in each pot to keep the plants upright.
If you get 6 peppers on 1 side of a plant it will lean to one side and possibly bend/snap the stem, so the canes keep them upright and prevent them toppling over

Last year I grew Hot Patio Sizzlers plants and they did very well. I still have plenty of chillies left over. They are small and hot. I’ve grown some more of them this year and also some De Cayenne red and some Habanero yellow and Habanero red. When I went to the Ideal Home this year I bought some chilli jam it was very nice, but cost nearly £5 a jar, so I might have a go at making some. Any recipes anyone?
  • Oh Chilli jam is a great idea because as usual I have been completely unable to gauge germination success rates and as a result have only one courgette plant but about 20 chilli plants  :D I can't bear to ever throw seedlings away though. I will donate them to neighbours but chilli jam is also a great idea! I'm growing Scotch Bonnet and Biquino
